CONFERENCE THEME DESCRIPTION
*Conference themes provide a thematic direction for the COSMA Conference each year. Abstracts submitted for consideration that fall outside these defined themes are encouraged and more than welcome.
Student Success: Achieving Outcomes Amidst a Changing Environment
In today’s rapidly evolving educational landscape, the definition of student success is consistently reexamined and reimagined. As institutions grapple with shifting demographics, emerging technologies, economic pressures, and societal challenges, the pursuit of meaningful student outcomes requires adaptability, innovation, and a renewed commitment to equity and inclusion. This conference theme invites educators, administrators, policymakers, and/or stakeholders to explore how we can continue to foster academic, personal, and professional success for all students, even as the context around faculty and students continues to transform.
Academic Freedom: Redefined
Academic freedom has long served as a cornerstone of higher education - protecting the rights of scholars to explore, teach, and express ideas without fear of censorship or retaliation. Yet in today’s complex social, political, and cultural climate, this foundational principle is being both challenged and reconsidered. What does academic freedom mean in an era of rapid information exchange, heightened political polarization, institutional accountability, and evolving public expectations? This conference theme invites participants to critically examine the evolving boundaries and implications of academic freedom in contemporary academia. This conference seeks to create a space for open dialogue about how academic freedom intersects with free speech, DEI, institutional values, public trust, and professional responsibility.
Sport Management: Who and What are We?
The field of sport management has grown rapidly over the past several decades, evolving from its roots in physical education and business into a dynamic, interdisciplinary domain that spans professional sports, collegiate athletics, community recreation, e-sports, analytics, media, and beyond. As the industry and academia continue to expand and diversify, a timely and necessary question emerges: Who and what is sport management, really? This conference theme challenges scholars, practitioners, and students to reflect on the identity, purpose, and future direction of sport management as a discipline and profession. COSMA provides an ideal forum for critical inquiry into the values, roles, and boundaries that define sport management education - both within higher education and the broader landscape of sport.
